September is here

Update on the Lentil Nut Loaf: yeah, not so much...

Remembering the benefits of music.

Registering for both a September and an October neighborhood 5K. Yea!

Somewhat stunned to find out that the A&P lab I missed last week involved a cat dissection. And, worse, the lab manual photos are eerily like the photo I took of the cute & belly spralling Garrett from last night. Oh my. I remember dissecting fetal pigs and frogs in highschool and being "ok" (at the time) with the idea of sacrificing a life for the benefit of education (for the benefit of saving and improving lives in the future). But a cat? And now that I'm in love with my orange boys? Oh my. I can only imagine that this is why they say that being a parent changes the way you look at the world.

Patience and love to address the challenges of the 3rd season.

Rainy Wednesday

In fact, this is the first rainy day in a long time and lots of people are glad to see it here in Charlottesville.

Challenge with course registration is solved, or at least on its way to being solved. Another reminder that you have to at least show up.

At Tolle's suggestion, I'm focusing on being present.

The first attempt at the Yogaville Lentil Nut Loaf is in the oven! Thanks to the running buddy for all of the bags of frozen nuts that she left that supported the recipe. If it turns out well, I'll post pictures and the recipe.

Horse & Buggy Pick Up x2

Oh boy, I'm two pickups behind, so let me see if I can recreate them:

August 21st
1 loaf bread
4 ears corn
3 large peaches
1 large (and yummy) cantaloupe
1 yellow pepper
1 red pepper
3 roma tomatoes
4 potatoes
(I think that was everything. Thanks to Dave for picking this up while I was away)

August 7th
Hm. This one is harder to remember.... let's see...
6 ears of corn
1 heirloom tomato
2 regular tomatoes
2 cucumbers
a whole lotta peaches
some smallish green apples
1 loaf bread
6 eggs
...that's about it, I think...

I'm getting a bit better about not wasting things. I ended up boiling all 6 ears of corn two weeks ago, and then cut the kernels off the cob and making creamed corn, my favorite.

I'm about to blanch and cut more of the peaches and freeze them in my smoothie bucket.

Mashed potatoes were yummy this week.

Good stuff.

Vacation return...

A happy welcome home.

My favorite part of my Yogaville visit was the food. Recipe for Lentil Nut Loaf is high on the list. And, I could eat all of the meals from my favorite eating utensils: a wide, shallow bowl and a soup spoon.

Best way to train for a neighborhood 5K is to run in the neighborhood. Today's evening run: 2 strong hilly Belmont miles. 70 degrees and cloudy. Not bad for taking a few weeks off.

Thinking about ways to sort out the unexpected semester scheduling. The possibilities are wide open, but there definitely needs to be something.

Vacation begins...

...after a 10 hour work day.

Without question, teaching is the most rewarding part of my work. Herb asked me the other day if I'd do it again (start up this education program) if I'd known then what I know now, and the answer is yes, without a doubt, and with even more enthusiam. What a good reminder that sometimes the things that seem the most challenging can also be the most rewarding.

Velvut Rutting it all the way home.

Lots of Olympic action tonight! Michael Phelps goes 8 for 8 golds in these games (no doubt thanks to his teammates, I might add). WR in the 100m dash by a cocky Jamacian. And, the women's marathon - first olympic marathon I've watched since running one myself. And, you know, all I can say is that these women ran this race more than twice as fast as I ran mine. Damn. I've got a different appreciation for that kind of effort now.

Gotta laugh when you're so tired that you scare yourself when you look in the mirror.

Looking forward to a morning run tomorrow.

Journalist, 'My Cancer' Blogger Leroy Sievers Dies

This remembrance from npr.org articulates better than I can why I've been captivated by Leroy Sievers's story since I first heard about him on Ted Koppel's documentary about a year ago.

There is something about his honest approach and his courage to face something that was entirely consuming and bodily in such a personal way, but also entirely outside of self, and outside of his control...

Thursday again already

Lots of late night Olympics watching.

Consensus that brownies should be in their own essential food group. And permission to take my time while I hurry up and wait.

Work turns full on overnight. Staying ahead of the curve thru Saturday. Damn, Saturday?

Kallie says, "Hi!" when she answers the phone. Looking forward to seeing her in a few days.

Patience with a-little-is-better-than-nothing.

Thursday

A little spontaneity during our Wednesday night outing.

Waking up on the right side of the bed. And being able to sleep again, albeit a little too much.

Walking to pick up Horse & Buggy.

Saving nearly-too-old fruit in my frozen fruit bucket - a Dave idea for easy smoothie making - I love it.

Phone call from Kallie, who told me that she had a fun time at the beach today.

Remembering that tomorrow is trash day, for once!

Horse & Buggy Pick Up

Well, I forgot to record my shares from two weeks ago. Unfortunately, some of that produce from two weeks ago landed in the garbage today.

But, here's today's share:
6 ears corn
2 cucumbers
6 peaches
9 small apples
3 large & 1 small tomatoes
1 heirloom tomato
3 peaches
1 head bibb lettuce
1 large cantaloupe
1 loaf rosemary bread
6 eggs

The volume of food is almost overwhelming. Seems like the best thing to do is to just start eating. And call up your friends to see who'll be willing to take some of it off your hands. :)

Probably....

...from September 2001, probably in California somewhere. On an epic road trip which can probably never be replicated.
